The use of nano-ESI and MALDI in Protein Analysis and Proteomics

Hans-Werner Lahm
Roche Genetics
F. Hoffmann-La Roche
Basel, Switzerland

Abstract
Electrospray ionization and MALDI are the two most widely used ionization techniques for obtaining mass spectra of peptides and proteins. It will be discussed how these techniques can be employed for high volume protein identification, de novo peptide sequencing, and protein mass determination.  In addition, the importance of software tools for automation and the use of a central database for workflow management and data archiving will be addressed.

Background
Dr. Hans-Werner Lahm is a Senior Research Specialist at F. Hoffmann-La Roche's Roche Center for Medical Genomics in Basel, Switzerland. He received his Ph.D. in Macromolecular Chemistry & Protein Chemistry with Helmut Zahn at Aachen University, Germany. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in Nutley, NJ., Visiting Scientist at the Biomedical Center, Uppsala, Sweden, Senior Scientist at Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc. Nutley, NJ, and Staff Scientist at the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope Natl. Medical Center, Duarte, CA. His current research interests center around protein analysis. These include protein and peptide sequencing techniques based on chemical methods and mass spectrometry, cLC/MS, protein-protein interaction analysis and analysis of posttranslational modifications.

Profiling and Imaging of Proteins in Tissue Sections using Mass Spectrometry as a Discovery Tool in Biological Research

The San Francisco Bay Area Mass Spectrometry discussion group was formed in 1980 to provide a regular gathering for people interested in mass spectrometry and allied topics. BAMS currently has a membership of about 280 individual and 20 corporate members, and meets 8-10 times per year for a midweek dinner and lecture.  Meetings attract between 30 and 90 people, and are held at a restaurant or hotel in the bay area convenient for our speaker.  We usually convene at 6:00 pm for cocktails, dinner at 7:00 pm, and lecture at 8:15 pm.

If you have suggestions for a meeting topic, or know of a prominent mass spectroscopist who will be visiting the bay area, please contact our program chair.

As a service to our members, we post Employment postings.

To become a member, please fill out and mail in a membership form.
BAMS has been fortunate to have had many excellent speakers in our short history.
If you have suggestions for a meeting topic please contact our program chair.
If you have questions or comments about BAMS, please contact one of the BAMS officers.
Please thank our corporate sponsors who help keep BAMS membership and dinner costs low.
