From Sea to Pharmacy - The Role of Ms. & Mr.

Professor Phil Crews
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Institute
of Marine Sciences, UC Santa Cruz

Abstract
The field of marine natural products remains a vibrant area of inquiry with 600 - 800 new compounds being reported each year in the chemical literature.  This lecture will highlight some astounding new developments with a focus on chemistry discovered at UCSC.  Organic Ms (Mass spectrometry) and Mr (Magnetic resonance) are the most important core techniques employed in this research.  Examples of recent episodes involving organic structure analysis will be presented.  Also included will be highlights of sponge-derived compounds in current use as molecular probes or at the doorstep of therapeutic development.

Background
The research done in our marine natural products laboratory emphasizes the exploration of tropical marine sponges and their microorganism associants.  We are interested in issues of both chemistry and biology.  An important chemical theme is to define new families of natural products, especially those that are nitrogen containing. Once chemical themes emerge, these can be used to address biological issues.  We seek to link the novel structures discovered to utility as molecular probes or as the starting point for the design of new therapeutic agents.  Our work is highly collaborative which allows progress to be simultaneously made on a variety of research goals.  Professor Crews has over 145 articles published in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of Organic and Natural Products Chemistry.

Dr. Crews obtained his B.S. from UCLA and his Ph.D. from UC Santa Barbara in 1969.  Following a postdoctoral appointment at Princeton University, he joined UC Santa Cruz in 1970.  He has been a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii (1974) and the University of Arizona (1981).

As a service to our members, we post Employment postings.

As a trial service to our members, we are now posting Situations Wanted.  (Note: BAMS isn't a career center and will only post brief positions wanted for BAMS members only).

The San Francisco Bay Area Mass Spectrometry discussion group was formed in 1980 to provide a regular gathering for people interested in mass spectrometry and allied topics. BAMS currently has a membership of about 280 individual and 20 corporate members, and meets 8-10 times per year for a midweek dinner and lecture.  Meetings attract between 30 and 90 people, and are held at a restaurant or hotel in the bay area convenient for our speaker.  We usually convene at 6:00 pm for cocktails, dinner at 7:00 pm, and lecture at 8:15 pm.

If you have suggestions for a meeting topic, or know of a prominent mass spectroscopist who will be visiting the bay area, please contact our program chair.

To become a member, please fill out and mail in a membership form.
BAMS has been fortunate to have had many excellent speakers in our short history.
If you have suggestions for a meeting topic please contact our program chair.
If you have questions or comments about BAMS, please contact one of the BAMS officers.
Please thank our corporate sponsors who help keep BAMS membership and dinner costs low.
