Protein:Protein and Protein:Carbohydrate Interactions

Abstract
Non-covalent interactions of Protein:protein and protein:carbohydrate interactions are now possible given the newest advances in both electrospray ionization and new mass analyzers. This seminar will show data on both of these types of important biological interactions using both IMS-TOF and FTICR mass analyzers interaced to ESI. Involvement of sulfation and phosporylation will be discussed and strategies outlined on how to correlate these post-translational modifications with high mass non-covalent complex analysis.

Background
Professor Julie Leary received her Ph.D. in Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under Professor Klaus Biemann. She then did a short postdoctoral work in the same lab and simultaneously held a visiting scientist position at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. She moved to University of California , Berkeley in 1985 where she was appointed the director of the mass spectrometry facility, as well as the adjunct professor, full rank. In 2004 she moved to University of California, Davis and became the professor of chemistry and molecular cell biology. She is also the faculty scientist in Lawrence Berkeley national labs, division of physical biosciences. Professor Leary is very active in the mass spectrometry field, and has been the chairman or board members for many conferences and journals. She was the Member at Large for Education at ASMS Board from 2000-2002. She is on the current editorial board of Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, Glycobiology and International Journal of Mass Spectrometry. In 2000, Professor Leary won the ASMS Biemann Medal award in Mass Spectrometry.

The San Francisco Bay Area Mass Spectrometry discussion group was formed in 1980 to provide a regular gathering for people interested in mass spectrometry and allied topics. BAMS currently has a membership of about 280 individual and 20 corporate members, and meets 8-10 times per year for a midweek dinner and lecture.  Meetings attract between 30 and 90 people, and are held at a restaurant or hotel in the bay area convenient for our speaker.  We usually convene at 6:00 pm for cocktails, dinner at 7:00 pm, and lecture at 8:15 pm.
