*Speaker: Dr. Richard Smith, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory*

Title: New Mass Spectrometry based Proteomics Technologies: From Systems Biology Research to Broad Clinical Application

Summary: Richard D. Smith, Ph.D., is a Battelle Fellow and Chief Scientist in the Biological Sciences Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, WA. His research has involved the development and application of advanced methods, instrumentation, and informatics capabilities and their applications in biological research,. Dr. Smith is Director of the NIH Biomedical Technology Resource Center for Integrative Biology, the NIAID Bio-Defense Proteomics Research Center for Identifying Targets for Therapeutic Interventions using Proteomics, and the U.S. Department of Energy High Throughput Proteomics Facility at PNNL. He is an adjunct faculty member of the Departments of Chemistry at Washington State University, the University of Utah, and the University of Idaho. Dr. Smith has presented more than 350 invited or plenary lectures at national and international scientific meetings, and is the author or co-author of more than 700 publications. Dr. Smith holds thirty-one patents and has been the recipient of seven R&D 100 Awards and the 2003 American Chemical Society Award for Analytical Chemistry.

This talk will illustrate technical and biological challenges (such as arising from human biological variation) associated with candidate protein biomarker discovery for a range of biomedical applications. The talk will then describe recent mass spectrometry based platform developments that can address these challenges.

We look forward to seeing you there!

As a service to our members, we post Employment postings.

The San Francisco Bay Area Mass Spectrometry discussion group was formed in 1980 to provide a regular gathering for people interested in mass spectrometry and allied topics. BAMS currently has a membership of about 280 individual and 20 corporate members, and meets 8-10 times per year for a midweek dinner and lecture.  Meetings attract between 30 and 90 people, and are held at a restaurant or hotel in the bay area convenient for our speaker.  We usually convene at 6:00 pm for cocktails, dinner at 7:00 pm, and lecture at 8:15 pm.

If you have suggestions for a meeting topic, or know of a prominent mass spectrometrist who will be visiting the bay area, please contact our program chair, Maryann Shen.

To become a member, please fill out and mail in a membership form.
BAMS has been fortunate to have had many excellent speakers in our history.
If you have suggestions for a meeting topic please contact our program chair Maryann Shen.
If you have questions or comments about BAMS, please contact one of the BAMS officers.
Please thank our corporate sponsors who help keep BAMS membership and dinner costs low.
