*Speaker: Dr. Ryan Julian, University of California, Riverside*

Title: Directed Bond Dissociation in Gas Phase Experiments with Peptides and Proteins: Extracting Specific Information from Proteomics

Summary: Dr. Ryan Julian received his B.S. in Chemistry from University of Utah, and was awarded his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Caltech in 2003. He is currently a principal investigator at UC Riverside. Dr. Ryan’s research interests include the development of new techniques utilizing mass spectrometry and spectroscopy to study biological systems including protein folding and assembly, molecular recognition, radical directed protein sequencing, and cluster chemistry. Dr. Ryan is the author or co-author of 40 publications, and has received many awards including the NSF Career Award & ASMS Research Award, etc.

This talk will describe a new radical based method for directing the fragmentation of proteins and peptides in gas phase electrospray ionization mass spectrometry experiments. Essentially, photochemistry is used to generate a radical in a specific location in the biomolecule, effectively creating a weak point. Subsequent collisional excitation of the peptide leads to fragmentation at the location of the radical. In peptides, this method can be utilized to directly identify the location of phosphorylated serine and threonine. By introducing an element of control, data collection and interpretation for proteomics experiments is vastly simplified.

We look forward to seeing you there!

As a service to our members, we post Employment postings UPDATED Feb 6th, 2009. two new postings.

The San Francisco Bay Area Mass Spectrometry discussion group was formed in 1980 to provide a regular gathering for people interested in mass spectrometry and allied topics. BAMS currently has a membership of about 280 individual and 20 corporate members, and meets 8-10 times per year for a midweek dinner and lecture.  Meetings attract between 30 and 90 people, and are held at a restaurant or hotel in the bay area convenient for our speaker.  We usually convene at 6:00 pm for cocktails, dinner at 7:00 pm, and lecture at 8:15 pm.

If you have suggestions for a meeting topic, or know of a prominent mass spectrometrist who will be visiting the bay area, please contact our program chair, Maryann Shen.

To become a member, please fill out and mail in a membership form.
BAMS has been fortunate to have had many excellent speakers in our history.
If you have suggestions for a meeting topic please contact our program chair Maryann Shen.
If you have questions or comments about BAMS, please contact one of the BAMS officers.
Please thank our corporate sponsors who help keep BAMS membership and dinner costs low.
