Title: "Integrated mass spectrometry based metabolomic profiling and tissue imaging"
ABSTRACT:
Mass spectrometry has been used for decades to measure metabolite levels in clinical settings, due to its ability to provide quantification and structural information (from MS/MS fragmentation patterns), as well as its high sensitivity. Recent developments in mass spectrometry now allow for 'metabolomic' profiling of biofluids, tissues, and cells for biomarker discovery and screening. While these approaches maximize the number of metabolites detected, the grinding and extraction results in a loss of spatial information and an average metabolite concentration. Given the inherent heterogeneity within tissues, the 'grind-and-find' approach may miss clinically important sub-populations. Therefore it is critical to integrate profiling and metabolite imaging of tissues. This talk will present integrated experimental approaches using LC/MS/MS metabolomic profiling and Nanostructure-Initiator Mass Spectrometry based tissue imaging.
SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY:
Trent Northen (PhD) is a Staff Scientist at both the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) and PI at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. His research group is focused on developing and implementing mass spectrometry based technologies for studying metabolism. He is the inventor of Nanostructure-Inititator Mass Spectrometry and related enzyme assays (Nimzyme) that he is developing at JBEI for biofuel production. Dr. Northen has a BS in Chemical Engineering (UCSB), PhD in Chemistry (ASU), and spent 2 years as a post-doctoral fellow in Gary Siuzdak's lab (The Scripps Research Institute). He is the recipient of several awards including Innovator of the year (AzTE) and holds several patents.

The San Francisco Bay Area Mass Spectrometry discussion group wasformedin 1980 to provide a regular gathering for people interested in massspectrometryand allied topics. BAMS currently has a membership of about 270individualand 20 corporate members, and meets 7-10 times per year for a midweekdinnerand lecture. Meetings attract between 30 and 90 people, and areheldat a restaurant or hotel in the bay area convenient for ourspeaker. We usually convene at 6:00 pm for cocktails, dinner at 6:30 to 7:00 pm, andlectureat 7:30 to 8:00 pm.
If you have suggestions for a meeting topic, or know of a prominentmass spectrometrist who will be visiting the bay area, please contactour Program Chair, Maryann Shen.
