Title: "Sweet success in O-linked glycopeptide analysis. And some bitter aftertaste"

ABSTRACT:

Studying intracellular O-GlcNAc modifications has become hot because of the regulatory/signaling function of this modification and its interplay with phosphorylation. At the same time the distant cousins, extracellular O-linked glycopeptides are quite neglected. However, these O-linked glycosylations represent somewhat similar challenges for the analytical chemists. My talk will focus on the analysis of mucin-core type-1 structures that beautifully illustrate the potential solutions and difficulties in studying O-glycosylation. I also will discuss a novel enrichment method for O-GlcNAc modified proteins.br>

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY:

Katalin F. Medzihradszky is an adjunct professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the School of Pharmacy of the University of California San Francisco, and also the head of the Proteomics Research Group in the Biology Research Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in Szeged, Hungary. Her research interests are in protein structure elucidation using advanced mass spectrometric and chromatographic techniques. Her specialty is using different MS/MS techniques such as collision-induced dissociation, electron-capture dissociation and electron-transfer dissociation for peptide sequence determination as well as for studying post-translational modifications, especially O-linked glycosylation. Prof. Medzihradszky has been working at UCSF for 22 years. She previously held an industrial research position at Gedeon Richter LTD, Budapest, Hungary and before that she was a member of the Peptide Synthesis Group in the Chemical Research Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences also in Budapest, Hungary. She has contributed more than 100 scientific publications, 17 book chapters and reviews, and holds 2 patents. She is on the editorial board of Molecular & Cellular Proteomics. She is the co-chair of an ASBMB special biannual symposium on post-translational modifications. Dr. Medzihradszky graduated from the Eötvös Lóránd University (Budapest, Hungary) in organic chemistry, where she also received her Ph.D.

The San Francisco Bay Area Mass Spectrometry discussion group was formed in 1980 to provide a regular gathering for people interested in massspectrometry and allied topics. BAMS currently has a membership of about 270 individual and 20 corporate members, and meets 7-10 times per year for a mid week dinner and lecture.  Meetings attract between 30 and 90 people, and areheldat a restaurant or hotel in the bay area convenient for our speaker. We usually convene at 6:00 pm for cocktails, dinner at 6:30 to 7:00 pm, and lecture at 7:30 to 8:00 pm.

If you have suggestions for a meeting topic, or know of a prominentmass spectrometrist who will be visiting the bay area, please contactour Program Chair, Maryann Shen.

To become a member, please fill out and mail to BAMS the membership form with BAMS ADDRESS HERE.
BAMS has been fortunate to have had many excellent speakers in our history.
If you have suggestions for a meeting topic please contact our program chair Maryann Shen.
If you have questions or comments about BAMS, please contact one ofthe Current BAMS Officers.
Please thank our Corporate Sponsors whohelp keep BAMS membership and dinner costs low.
